I drive a mk4 1.9 Ibiza and every so often when going forward or in reverse (more so in reverse) it makes this knocking/banging noise it doesn't do it all the time but its really annoying.. the car seems to be driving fine.. it slots into gears without hassle and theres no funny noises that I can hear coming from the engine.. so any thoughts?

    Potentially engine mounts

Torque mount I'd say, known as dogbone mount on the vags. Common enough fault

Yeah could well be the issue alright. Heres a video of a failed torque mount, you can see the whole engine/gearbox twist with the revving
