Where is the best place to buy tools for home DIY. I will be doing some flooring, hole repairs and some cabinet fitting.

I need a multipurpose power drill, wood saw, coping saw and hack saw, socket set, level etc.

Is there any benefit in also getting an impact driver along with the power drill

    I was looking at McQuillans.ie

    Is there a better option.

    Thank you

I'd be more inclined to research decent brands of the tools you want, then see which shops offer the best deals on those particular items. No shop will have the best price on every item you want.

Amazon and Screwfix are my main choices for tools. Have decent enough brands and the returns and repair policy are very good in my experience.

I picked up a Makita impact driver on a good deal as I was doing lots of framing work with timber. It's ideal for driving big screws but i haven't used it for any finer work.

B&Q for drill/chop saws. Local hardware/builders merchant for levels/hack saws/coping saws. Socket set shop around. Market stalls usually way cheaper for socket sets but difference in price between shops is huge. Get a good set like Britool etc if you can.

I find Screwfix pretty good as regards value for money, I've bought plenty from Axminster in the past but sterling rate puts me off now, unless there's something that can't be got elsewhere. As regards bricks and mortar stores I would rate McQuillans and Richard Gough's. I've bought plenty of sockets and spanners from Halfords too and no complaints so far (others will say to stay clear), especially items on offer (would rarely pay the "full" price for anything there if I could help it. For the type of basic hand tools that you list, such as hammer, coping saw, hack saw, levels etc you'd be best to go for branded tools that will last, from makers like Bahco, Stanley, Spear & Jackson etc. Some of the cheaper own brand tools tend to be poorer quality or of poor design.

Your local Lidl and Aldi have lots of hand tools on sale last week and this week.Mitre saws and mitre boxes, hand saws, plasterboard saws, socket sets, spirit levels, measuring tapes and ratchet sets. All good enough for some home diy jobs and wont cost an arm and a leg to buy either.

Some of the Aldi stuff is not bad. For tools I normally use caulfieldindustrial.com or amazon.co.uk. Some electronics on radionics aswell.
