Diesel v Petrol (yet again)

I am sure this has been asked loads in various different situation but after everything I have read I am still confused.

I currently drive an 02 ford focus pertorl 1.4 and want to treat myself to an upgrade. I am willing to spend €15k. I do approx 10k miles / 16k km annually. This usually means a round trip of 40km six days a week and a 400km motorway trip approx every 2 months.

Everyone I know tells me I should get a diesel. I suspect myself I should go for a petrol. What are you thoughts - do I need a diesel or petrol.

I drove a lovely high spec Insignia but didn't bother with it base on it been a 2l. I am considering a 1.6 diesel now.

I find it pretty hard to get what I want in a petrol. I would like a Passat and would consider Insignias, Skoda. Ford and Honda are not an option for different reasons.

I guess my question is would I justify a 1.6 diesel passat, or am i better off looking at 1.4 petrol insignias/passat. I don't now much about cars and not really familiar with DPF in diesels. Would a 1.6 passat have a DPF?

Thanks for an advise. Sorry if this question is boring you at this stage but I really want to make a call that is efficient.

I drove a 2008 1.4 tsi passat petrol for 3 years.Cracking car with no problems. For your miles it would be suitable.Rare enough second hand .I had the highline trim with great spec.Excellent on economy-averaged 46/47 mpg

Your annual mileage is pretty low but your daily drive may not be too detrimental to a diesel car. As you said your choice in diesel cars is alot wider than petrol but given your annual mileage I don't think your decision should be influenced so much by which is more fuel efficient.

You probably buy a fresher 1.4 TSi Passat on your budget than a diesel one too.
