They've been trying for quite some time and it looks like they've finally done it.

5.04 million cars sold in the first 6 months of 2015 vs 5.02 million cars for Toyota

    BBC linky

For 70 years GM was on top, then for 7 years Toyota and now VW. Will it last? Or will some Chinese company take over in a few years time?

I haven't seen the figures, but I'd say looking around, Hyundai/Kia must be hot on their heels?

Combined they'll sell about 8m this year. GM is still near enough to 10m and Renault / Nissan is 4th with 8.5m. Close enough together the lot of them. But no signs from Chinese companies getting close

Good point but the 4 prestige brands probably amount to only a few % of total number of cars sold. Above figures are all number of cars, it would be interesting to see the $ turnover for each company. No doubt that would work in VW's favour.

    Doubtful for now.

Domestic sales of Chinese brands have collapsed in the past 2 years. Even the locals recognise it as being shyte and want foreign brands.

Is VW actually really "VW, Audi and Skoda" or are they really 5 million more passats trying to get past me :P

Surely this is a golden opportunity for a Chinese car maker, maybe even something backed by one of the more established global brands.

They should compare it to Daihatsu/Lexus/Toyota then.

Daihatsu make a lot of them one seater thingy things.

So a more accurate description would be VAG top Toyota?

Considering the volume VW have in comparison to Toyota, that's still not bad going for Toyota.

GM I'm surprised with, I'd have thought they were bigger than they are considering what they own.

What % of the sales is from Diesel buying europeans? Toyota have large markets in other global segments - Asia/USA where people would puke at the thought of a diesel.

A big chunk of the cars involved here are models for developing countries that we don't even get, or stuff that we got 10 years ago.

I'm sure they did. It's obvious from the figures that all makes within these car giant conglomerates were added up

Oh are Daihatsu and Lexus not included? Surely the bones of a million cars then not included in the Toyota figures in that case?

Jaguar Land-Rover. They're still built at Castle Bromwich and pound-for-pound about the most devilishly handsome bounder of a thing one can buy! ;)

Yep I don't think they'll be making them alongside the Tata safari anytime soon

VW did get ahead of Toyota for 6 months a few years back, 2010 I think.

    Is Ducatti included?

You might be surprised, VW poured a lot of money into various areas recently, and R&D costs for some cars is massive. However in a few years their MQB platform success will bear fruit, all the R&D money will come back in spades!

Tata seemed to have been good for those brands.

The BBC uses "vehicle" in the title of the link. I don't think motorcycles are included.

Still missing my point. BBC would say vehicle, but it's VW who released their figures. What did VW release specifically is all that matters. Assuming Journalists did any meaningful research for a headline is giving many of them far too much credit!!

Hard to find much in Google. Here's from the horses mouth:

Looks like Scania and MAN are included, no mention of Ducatti or Lambourghini, but that doesn't mean they're not included either, they might be part of Audi's figures. No menion of Bugatti either, but one might assume they're included!

I know, that's why I said they might be included in Audi's figures, which still leaves my question about Ducati unanswered! They might well be included in the sales figures for all we know, regardless of who types what on the headlines!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,100 ✭✭✭noelf

Toyota's sales include Diahatsu and the Hino truck brands . Volkswagen's include the Man and Scania truck brands no mention of Audi , Lexus .. Automotive News Europe..Toyota has a better profit margin than Volkswagen though due to much higher employee levels and worker's union ..
