Going to assume that the pine ceiling has been previously varnished.

I would recommend a coat of "Bin" primer followed by 2/3 coats of waterbased Satinwood in what ever colour you choose. Lightly sand between coats.

Yes it is varnished with knots in it. Don't know what bin primer is I take it it will get rid of the dark stains and knots before I paint it. Is satinwood gloss or matt. Sorry for all the questions just want to make sure I do it right

The Bin primer will adhere to the varnish and give a good base for the finish coats. Bin comes as white but can be tinted if needed to suit finish colour.
There are other primers on the market now from Fleetwood and colour trend that are water based and are easier to use that bin primer.
Gloss is I the highest level of shine you can get then satin, eggshell and the lowest level is Matt.
    Hope that is a help

Be careful with the primer. It's impossible to get off anything if it drips. Worse than paint! I did this on a wood panel ceiling last year, and it's great stuff, though it took ages!

Maybe should get a painter in so I have a dodgy light fitting in the bathroom too that needs changing so could get that done. As well as the suite and tiles :) long awaited job

I will confess, I still haven't finished! And I just realised that it's exactly a year since I started! It's not that bad, but I had to do lots of if with a brush, to get into the joins between the pieces of wood! If your ceiling is smoother, it'll be quicker!
But the bits I did look very well!

No unfortunately not smooth it's a pine ceiling so think I might just get someone in hate painting ceilings anyway always have to take breaks if I get dizzy

I just had our pine ceiling painted in Dulux, Mid Farrow (matt) and it came out beautifully. You can still see some knots and tell that it's wood, but that's the look I was going for.

You should also get a couple of tubes of caulk to fill the joints. Nothing as bad as black lines running along a painted ceiling.
