Hello all. I am looking at upgrading the car quite considerably in the coming month or so. I've got a new job with a relatively long (~45 min) commute on motorways. Been looking a diesel cars and I quite like the look of the newer model S60s. I don't see too many of them around on the roads so I'm wondering what the general consensus is on them? I'll have the guts of 16-18 k to spend on the car so can afford a relatively new model. Can better cars be had for that kind of money? I look forward to your opinions,

    Cheers

    DK

It depends what your needs are. If you want a comfortable cruiser you won't do better then the S60.

My folks are on their third, the first two were the 2.6 D5 engine, which is a peach. They got a new one this year, a 2.0 D4 model which returns around 55mpg. The first two cars clocked up about 350,000km and never gave any issues apart from routine servicing.

Great cars. Make sure you get leather seats, they're as comfortable as any seats i've ever sat in.

Sounds perfect. Is the two litre a better option than the 1.6? I seem to recall reading somewhere that the 1.6 is a bit dodgy?

Took a few for a test drive in the last few weeks ,fab car found the 1.6 slow and underpowered for a big car so 2l or bigger was the better option...as mentioned go for the leather ...so comfortable . Plenty of standard spec on most cars.
Unfortunately Our budget did not stretch to the s60 so settled on a s40 instead still a fine motor and has the leather seats and plenty of kit ...even the s40 is very comfy to drive even if the boot is a tad small ...but I did find the s60 nicer than a couple of Audis I test drove.

The 2.0d will be far more powerful and enjoyable for motorway commuting than the 1.6d. The 2.0d will probably be more fuel efficient too as it is under less stress.

Definitely get the 2.0, it's comparable to the old 2.6 and is quieter, more refined and does better mpg.

Where you getting 2.6 from? The D5 has always been a 2.4.

The 2.0 litre in the second generation S60 is a five cylinder in either 136bhp or 163bhp. It is the engine to go for in my opinion.

    Yes, D5 is 2.4
My Dad is on his 4th S60, currently a 2014 D5 215bhp. Cracking car, I drive an S Line A5 and I rate the volvo better on many ways.

They tend to be quite nicely priced, I'd go for a 5cyl 2.0D if possible.

I think the 1.6D is the PSA engine that the Focus uses that so many people on here dislike, isn't it?

I remember looking a while back and thought they were pricey, even a few years old.
