gap betwwen fireplace surround and base

hi, ive noticed over the years a gap between the marble surround of fireplace and hearth. it hasnt got any bigger in the time ive noticed it and now. someone (not an expert) said it is prob becasue the fireplace wasnt laid properly on a foundation just slapped down. does this sound accurate? is it serious?
