What can I expect to happen to me long term? Is my personality going to melt away? Is the flat effect going to take over, leaving me zombie like? Am I going to lose who I am?

No. Talk with ShineOnline - lots of help, information, support for yourself and your family. Educate yourself. There are a lot of early intervention programmes run by the HSE Mental Health Services. And Robert Whittaker has written some useful, hopeful, and interesting stuff. Mental Health Ireland has loads of resources too. This should get you started.

Schizophrenia is really hugely misunderstood generally in the media, and in films. Here's a list of famous people who had/have the diagnosis. And there are varying kinds, and varying severities. Generally, the earlier you are treated and look after yourself, the greater your social support, the better the outcomes.

I'll probably think of more later.

My room-mate is severely schizophrenic (I believe) and it doesnt seem so bad. They are very happy a lot of the time, and with the proper help, can have it almost completely under control. They are a very interesting person, with a lot of extreme highs and lows (in their particular situation), and I have learned much from them.
Your personality, I'm thinking, may well become more unique and extravagant, which for the most part is a good thing, IMO. I'd say, you will further develop who you are.
