Thinking about changing my car at the moment. Been looking at a new renault grand megane. They appear to be good value for money. Any opinions on them ?

Just do a search using the key words, Renault, electrics, Megane and forty foot barge pole and you should find all the information you need...

Avoid! I had one and really liked it at the time. Extremely cosy and cheap but had loads of trouble with it. Coils, sensors and other electrical problems. They seem to be great until they become a few years old and then seem to have lots of electrical problems. I traded in mine in 2010 but my sister in law bought one shortly afterwards and had all the same problems as me. She was constantly in the garage with it and in the end she discovered that there was a problem with water inside her engine and it seized up after she had it about 6 months. Have also heard lots of problem stories about keys. Whatever about buying a new one I wouldn't buy one a few years old again.

Unless your talking about a post 08 car, it's a completely different thing altogether.

If there was water in the engine, it most likely got there through being driven through water. Theres not really any other way for it to get in there unless someone pours it in the oil or fuel filler. No car is immune from that.

The Megane III is a fine car.

There is a brand new Megane being launched soon so you should be looking for a very good deal on existing models.

I'm sick of this crap. I have a Megane 3 and have people saying this sh!t to be me everyday of the week. Oh sure I had a 2002 Megane or 1998 or 2005 Megane and it caused awful trouble. Unless you had a mk3 2009 onwards Megane you might as well be taking about a focus because they are about as similar.

I actually own a Megane 3 granted don't have it that long 3 months but have 6k km on it and it works perfectly. Mine is 2011 with reasonably high mileage too. If you have any specific questions about them fire away op.

Woah steady on there! OP asked "any opinions on them". I gave my opinion based on the experience that I had with mine and what my sister in law had with hers. I don't claim to be a mechanic or even know that much about cars. Again I merely offered my "opinion". Mine was a 2007 (as far as I can remember).

Had one and it was great car. People who blow on about the current Renaults and poor reliability should just be ignored.

Ah I didn't mean it like that probably came across abit strong that wasn't my intention and was directed at your post as such. But I literally get it everyday of the week sure how would you buy one of them they will never work and cause trouble it's very annoying tbh. Yours would have been a mk2 phase 2 if it was 2007. Would be a very very different car to the mk3. But I get that you were only giving your opinion the same as I'm giving mine.

Thanks for clarifying and I prob got a bit defensive too, sorry 😳. I did love my Megane but cost me a fortune in the garage. Can't speak for the newer ones though.

I know it's a different car but had a Clio before my Megane and got all the stories about what an awful car it was too but I never had a minute of trouble with it, literally short of tyres I never spent a cent on it. Loved that car.

current model megane seems to have no horror stories attached at all!
    I'd go for it.

It's replacement is imminent so hence the bargains. The interior really gives it's age away now. Still, a lot of decent car for the money. As others have said the latest model is very reliable.

They are getting a bit long in the tooth at this stage but the mk3 megane is not a bad car at all. They are no less reliable than most other cars in that segment. The interior plastics are a little on the cheap side and the pre facelift is nicer at the front than the facelift imo. They are also nicest in 3dr or estate form.

I'd be a bit mixed on the Renault's anyone I know that's had one they ended up with having to do a fair bit of repairs on them and those cars would have been either the same age as mine and younger than my own. The electrics seem to be an issue with them but maybe the newer versions of the Renault Megane's aren't too bad.

    Whoa there again...!
He asked for opinions, I gave an opinion. Her indoors had a 2008 Grand Scenic, three out of four electric windows failed one after another, Renault wanted about €300 each for a replacement and these were only guaranteed for 12 months (any alarm bells ringing there..?).
My brother had one and he had two fail on him despite the car being less than three years old and very low mileage.
The dashboard also started to throw up weird faults and messages, Renault said it was a known problem so they were willing to chip in €300 of the €1000 to buy a new one (any alarm bells ringing yet...?).
Plus wait til you go to sell one or trade it in, they plummet in value.
If reliability was poor customer service was even worse, I don't care how good the new ones purport to be, Renault won't be getting any more of my money...

Renault replace these for €150 all in. No alarm bells. It's a known issue and cars of all makes have known issues. Again though, its on the old model and not a megane as is being discussed.

Issues with a 2008 scenic or your brothers old Megane are hardly going to be much use to the op who is buying a mk3 Megane. I get what your saying but you can't consider every Renault to be the same and have the same issues they've learned from there mistakes with the newer models.

I've found their customer service fine. I've emailed them a few general question and always got a good detailed response with relevant PDFs attached and everything. Most manufacturers would be hard put to answer your email especially when the car is out of warranty.

These were just a few of the issues we had at the time, and although it might be an 'old car' now, it wasn't back then. I've driven various cars with electric windows over the last thirty years without having a single failure, then three on one car...?
If you're telling me that in 2009 Renault suddenly got their act together, improved their quality control and finally worked out how to make reliable electrical systems and improved their customer service by 100% then I have to take your word for it.
They're still not getting any more of my money, far too much choice out there to even consider another Renault, and the issue with the plummeting depreciation still hasn't gone away....

Run a '08 Meagne III as a 2nd car for the last 5 years and apart from service items she hasn't missed a beat.

They are getting a little long in the tooth at this stage but are still reasonably modern to sit in.
