Hi, heading to Madrid just for a Fri & Sat night in September. Looking to book accommodation in a cool part of town, where we can just walk out to bars and restaurants. Can anyone suggest what part of town to look?

Not looking to do much touristy stuff, so being central isn't a major concern. (For example, on a Dublin scale looking more for a Ranelagh than a Temple Bar!)

The Salamanca area of Madrid is nice. Between Salamanca and Centro on a Google map is good.

    Hi tmq,
We are regular visitors to Madrid and always try to stay in this hotel.

It's in a nice quiet square but in the heart of the city. 2 mins walk to Sol & Opera, 5 mins walk to Plaza Mayor & the Palace. A great street for bars & restaurants is Calle Cava Baja just beyond Plaza Mayor. I would also recommend you visit Mercado San Miguel, just outside Plaza Mayor. It's full of tapas counters along with lots of other great food & wine.

If you are taking the metro to the hotel, Callao is just around the corner.

Salamanca, Chamberi , Retiro, southern part of Chamartín is probably what you are looking for. Generally you will find the more affluent "barrios" (neighbourhoods) north-east of the centre of Madrid . There are bars and good restaurants everywhere in Madrid. Meliá is probably the biggest chain of 3-5 star hotels in Spain, they are pretty good.
