General consensus is stay away from that 1.6d engine which gives lots of trouble if not looked after and stick with the 2.0D or if you can get one the 2.0 volvo D3 engine. Otherwise get a newer one with the 6 speed D2 115bhp engine which came out around 2011 and is mated with 6 speed gearbox. Seems to be much more reliable...at least I hope so as just got a new V40 with that engine!

    Had a 2006 S40 1.6d.

Good points - great spec, comfortable, solid on the road and very well built. Leather seats are very comfortable and are a must. Try and get one with the winter pack which includes heated front seats and bi-xenon headlights.

Bad points - Volvo parts are expensive, 1.6d is a Peugeot/Citroen/Ford engine and has patchy reliability. Engine felt underpowered in the S40 and I was always spending money fixing small things which added up in the end. DPFs give alot of problems on them, electrics can be iffy too. ABS traction control unit and stereo give problems too and are expensive to replace. Replacement key fob is over €250 and was a Volvo dealer only job as it needs to be re-coded by Volvo, not sure if that's the same these days though. Access to the boot is narrow too and rear legroom is tight.

The 2.0d is more reliable and powerful while returning the same fuel economy and has a 6th gear. If you are set on a 1.6d then try and get a 2010 D2 model as the 1.6d was replaced by a newer unit with an extra 5bhp and a 6 speed gearbox. It's supposed to be more reliable too and feels quicker.

If I was buying another one it would definitely be the 2.0d or D5.
