Poor tethered connections

Anyone else find the Motorolas in particular for me anyway, the G and E models, hard to tether to? I see Apps in the store, 3rd party Apps for creating Hotspots, any of them any addition?? Are they possibly dodgy to run your Data over or do they just create a connection?
