Verge markings on R-roads

Quick observation, which I've today asked my local council about. Most resurfacing round North Dublin that I've seen on Regional (R) roads seems never to include the broken yellow verge markings, or at best sporadic inclusion.

Are these a requirement or is it more of a custom that they are included? I've seen them on lower classes of road too so possibly the latter.

I'd be interested to know what other councils around the country are like at applying these - I'd see them as important enough myself especially on unlit routes.

Kerry County Council even paint them on L routes not wide enough for a central white line.

They've recently added them to part of the Newtownmountkennedy to Roundwood rd, the R765.
It was bad enough before with people not keeping tight to the hedge as two cars passed but they've effectively reduced the width by 2ft in places, people are now flying down the road well over on the other side of the road.

Its usually a case of one or the other (lane lines versus edge markings) on rural roads where the carriageway width is less than 6.2m.
