Restoring a Sony Vaio to an earlier date

Does anyone know why a Sony Vaio appears to be going successfully through the restoration process (to set it back a few days) and still fails to change? The failure notice comes up each time once the process is complete. I had a different brand of laptop before and this did not happen.
