Interesting move by the European Commission to open an anti-trust case against Sky UK. The trust of the complaint is that by buying rights to programming for only the UK & Ireland, Sky UK and its distributors are conspiring to prevent viewers in other European Union states from subscribing to its services.

This is a big hornet's nest that the Commission are disturbing. Taken to its logical conclusion it would create a single European market for sports and other rights (though the present case is centred around films). Certain EU governments (particularly the French, who would be worried about control of Canal+) would not be in favour of this, and some would be fearful that PSBs would effectively be removed from contention for bidding for sports and Hollywood movies.

You are right about the big hornets nest!

The problem is within Europe is the cost (Cost of living) that every country has different subscription rates.

Sky Uk, Possibly the highest subscription cost in Europe, So I highly doubt they would mind their subscriptions being opened up within Europe.

But then they have the worry that people will subscribe to cheaper packages from Eastern Europe.

It is a right can of worms alright.

But I can see their point.

There is legislation going through the eu now to allow films to be sold in each separate region.

Isn't that what the EU are trying to change?
