Is FETAC classed as formal education?

    Hi all,

    Just looking for some clarification.

I left school after Transition Year to do a FETAC Level 5 course, (Information Processing Level 5).

I got my major award, a distinction and I have applied for college through the CAO.

It's been two years since I was in second level education and I have been on the dole for 9 months. (A mix of X's and O's and now full dole).

My question is, as I'm only 18, education and period of being on the dole are taken into consideration.

Is FETAC Level 5 classed as formal education? I was on to my local welfare office and they said it is however my case officer said it is not and has handed in his recommendation.

    Just looking for your views.

    Thanks.

Maybe it depends on where you did it. Presumably you weren't in a PLC college, since you didn't do your Leaving. Was it a private provider? Was it a full time course?

It was done in an education centre (a VEC) and no it was only part time.

If it wasn't a full time course, that's probably why.

I don't get you, I mean, because it wasn't full time then I doubt it's classed as formal? I'd see formal being Junior, Leaving Cert or 3rd Level full time college courses or PLC?

My case officer told me to send in the application form anyways, it will be up to the deciding officer.

I'm sure there's someone else who can give you a better answer. I just think that part time courses, whatever qualification they lead to, aren't considered as formal education. I could be wrong.
