Upgrading MBP Flash Storage?

Hello all,

My original MB has been on its last legs the last few months so decided to buy myself a new shiny MBP this week. Arrived today in fact, and after transferring most of my data, I can see already the 128GB flash storage might prove to be a problem, its just not even close to enough memory... is there any way to upgrade this to 256GB or even 512GB?

It's possible but requires a custom-made part from a third party and will void your warranty.

My advice: return the machine and get the next model up.

Consider the alternative storage options too OP- the 35 euro Nifty Drive might help you if you buy a 64GB card to go along with it or the Apple airport time capsule if budget stretches to that

I changed mine. It was the first time I'd seen the inside of a computer, so no its not difficult. OWC is where I purchased my near TB drive and its faster all round then the old Samsung one. They also send you the two screwdrivers and spudger needed to do the job. They also have excellent videos to follow.

However. My machine was out of warranty and I don't think I'd open up a day old machine. I agree with the previous. Box it up ship it back and opt for the bigger drive.

The newer macbooks use pci-e based flash storage and cannot be upgraded presently as no one offers it. OWC have been promising it since the launch of the 2013 model and its still nowhere to be seen. As one user said return it and get the next model up.

I got a 128gb SD card that was sized to be perfectly flush with my MBA. I use it for media (downloads and iTunes). Works perfectly.

This Nifty drive with the 128gb storage, if you store movies on that drive. Would it be ok for playback through VLC or might it be slow and jumpy?

All my vids (variety of formats) play 100% perfectly from my SD card.

OP, you could probably still get by with the 128gb but you should store all your data, particularly static media files on an external HDD, they are very reasonable to buy. As previous poster said, the new models are PCI-e which makes them blazing fast but not upgrade able.

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it either though, Macs are expensive but you really need to do your upgrades (expensive too) at the get go because it's impossible afterwards. Everyone who has bought a Mac has made that mistake at some point.

Does that card look good to you? Advertises pretty fast speeds from what I can tell.

Probably not as fast as maybe Sandisk but if you're not using it every day then should be Ok for loading films for viewing later etc
