Heatshield woes, advice needed

    Gentlemen,
having spent a week thinking it was a belt, another week thinking it was a mount, and an hour tapping and shaking and prodding things.. I have a problem with heat shields vibrating and squeaking off each other rather than the usual "hitting a biscuit tin lid off something" kinda rattle.
    Very annoying.

I've bent things and pushed things and pressed things while tapping other things but nothing gets rid of it.

My theory is that if someone who knew what they were at was to remove the shields, pack or attach some kinda fibre/wool/matting in there and replace the heatshields it might solve it? Sound like a plan? Any better ideas, would rather keep them if possible.

    03 mini cooper 1.6 petrol.

Edit this is not diy- I've reached the limit of what I'm happy to do on axle stands on my driveway, time for a pro with a lift I think!

I had a heatshield break off at one of the attach points on the front of the engine which used to rattle and squeak. There didn't look to be any way of fixing it other than replacing the whole thing which wrapped around the whole front of the engine. In the end I opted to secure it with a tie wrap adjacent to the broken fix point which immediately stopped the rattling noises. I no longer have that car but as far as i know it's still exactly the same as I left it five years later....

Would adding some heat resistant matting just be a recipe for salt and water to accumulate during winter months?

Is there something they could push in in small squares rather than taking everything off first - the shield between the exhaust and the bulkhead looks like a dose to try to get out...

Never had this much or type noise from a heatshield even with the subaru.

Anyone recommend a place in limerick to sort this out?

Put some penetrating oil on the bolts and tighten them up , see if there is a improvement.
I wouldn't go putting anything like wool on a heat shield , could go on fire.

Ah kona you know I meant some heat resistant fibre stuff.

I know :) but other people would find it a great idea!

If it's squeaking it's most likely different sections of the heatshield rubbing off each other.
I had a squeak that was actually the exhaust rubbing the rear beam. Could be worth checking that out too, it was dependant on the weight in the car or how I was driving. I just changed the rubber mounts.

Hmmm exhaust mount. Back ones were done. Maybe mid ways needs to be looked at. It was the heat shields squeaking but maybe it was a shot mount causing them to move.... Yeah better check that.
