I'm aiming for a civil service job

So, obviously I'm a bit far off from the target, but I'd love (like most of us) to have a civil service job. The thing is, I don't know what I need to work towards.

I have no college qualifications and only have experience in catering, retail and sales.
I'm looking to set myself some goals, that will help give me a better chance at getting one of these positions.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to what courses or content to study?
Obviously, they're are different types of civil service jobs, but I'm a little bit clueless when it comes to the roles of clerical officers etc..

    Any help is appreciated :)

    What does that mean?

So you'd love a job in a role you are clueless about?

You're not really making much sense.

Ignore that. As a frontline civil servant it will come natural fast.

    Jobs are advertised here: http://publicjobs.ie/publicjobs/
Register your details there and let the website alert you when exams are being held.
Clerical and Executive officer are the two most common entry positions. a clerical officer is the dogsbody / army hero of the service and EO is the next grade up. You'll need a leaving cert (or equivalent). Any further education is a (very useful) bonus. Experience will stand to you.
Read the threads relating to both positions here. They are repetitive and exhausting but you will see one thing - a lot of people from a host of different backgrounds applying for the roles through open exams.

Agree with Floating Voter. I don't think though that you need the Leaving Cert to apply for Clerical Officer. In the current competition they left it kind of vague and said something like a good general standard of eduction. They did not however state that the Leaving Cert was a minimum requirement. You could always check with PAS on this. Even though in practice most applicants would have at least a Leaving Cert these days the aptitude tests are what really matter. Do well enough in those and you are well on your way into the job.
