    Hi All,
I bought €5,000 of aib shares a number of years ago at around the €1.20 mark. I see the government is planning to sell it's share in the bank at the end of this or middle of next year. I was wondering what impact this would have on my shareholding? I was hoping I might get my money back in 20 or so years:p:p:p lol... Anyone shed some light please?

    Thanks,

    Mez.

Aib shares should recover somewhat but it's going to take a long time. I think you better forget about them for a few years.

The only value those shares realistically have is that you will be able to use them to minimise cgt in the future.

You've a better chance of winning the lotto than getting your money back on them.

It is highly unlikely that the Government will sell the shares this year. The market is treating their bonds like junk and they are among the worst performing Bank bonds in the eurozone. You cant sell shares in a company that the market doesnt trust. You can actually, but the prices you will get for them is weak

if you bought 10k worth of shares @ 0.06c

    Total Shares : 166666

    Sell 166 666 share @ €7.75 = €1291661millon?

    Just Google AIB share price
Even at 6c the shares are hugely overpriced. There are just too many shares for sale, the government owns 99.8% of AIB the shares for sale represent only 0.2% of the bank. Even the government says not to buy

Anyone who bought shares at that price has lost a packet.

    €1,000 worth of shares = 16,667 shares.

Shares last year were split 250 for 1, 16,667 shares became 67 new shares.

At current share price of €7.60 - that leaves anyone now holding only €500 worth of shares.

Not unless you dispose of the shares...
