Hi I have 10,000 - 13,000 to spend on a petrol car, would really love something 1.8+ but realise I need to be realistic too. There not a whole lot of used petrolatum out there post 2008. Is 2008 too far to go back.

Any advice is welcome, everyone seems to be looking for diesels but my mileage is approx 7,000 miles per annum.

    Thanks in advance

Would be my choice, money left over incase needs any work done.

Think petrol bmw from that era have a habit of eating injectors and coil packs and are best avoided. Since efficient dynamics was introduced they were not as reliable. A Honda Accord petrol be nice car I had one was lovely machine.

+1 on the civic. I do 23000 miles per year. Got a 07 1.8 petrol civic, returning 45+ MPG. I just prefer to drive petrols and especially Honda's. The 140 bhp is nice too. No problems you would associate with diesel cars either. A great all round car.

Sorry for jumping in but every civic saloon from this era seems to have have the "felt" type seats. Do these seats seem a bit cheap ?

I'm not sure what you mean by "felt" type seats. It's just the type of fabric used and they are quite comfortable. They wear better than plastic fake leather or drab cloth fabrics some manufacturers use too.

It's a soft kind of material that I think was in some cars back in the 90's if I recall.

It's good quality stuff but a right PITA to keep looking semi-respectable and shows any little spillage or stain. Find one with conventional fabric (type s hatch) or leather.

Yeah. That was my exact thoughts too - that it would be a PITA to keep clean.

Hard to find one that's leather or conventional fabric.

The Executive model hatchback has leather, some of the UK imported IMA hybrid saloons came with leather too.

They're nicer in real life. They're kinda flat velour. The hatch seats are nicer.

    What about a Passat CC:

Rare enough in petrol form but this one is within budget as long as you don't need 5 seats and don't mind the €750 motor tax.

I saw this one alright and thought it looked too good to be true. That's a beautiful car.

The fact it's not diesel and tax is above what average joe is willing to pay is reflected in the asking price. If keen then I'd use that to your advantage and go in with a cheeky offer and see how you fair out.

Those Passat CCs are in a different league to the Honda Civic in fairness.

Thought you might like to know that I bought an Audi A4 after. She's 1.6 but tbh for the kind of driving I do, it's fine. Has about the same power as my bmw 318i. She was in great nick and bought locally so very happy. Well under budget too which is a change for me.

Looks very clean, didn't know that you could spec s-line with the 1.6 engine. Certainly never came across one on the B6 platform. Get up some more pics when you get a chance.

Yeah I was surprised to see some s-line upgrades on the 1.6. Its a limited edition I think. 102 bhp, she's probably a tad underpowered but because I do so much town driving, it matters little. It does feel much nicer on the open road though.
