No. Your account is suspended basically, not deleted.

Facebook love your juicy juicy details too much

I would think they are all gone but cold be wrong. By the way, as far as I remember it is a bit tricky deactivating. Unless of course they have changed the procedure.

    Hi!
Nope, no you won't lose all your stuff when you do this and, unlike Twitter there's no way of losing them permanently though there is a way to permanently delete your Facebook if you choose that option.

If a temporary deactivation, simply by signing in reactivates it but to others on your friends list they will see a blank profile pic and will be informed it's been deactivated if they click on it.

Twitter which I've deactivated causes data loss; they say things will right themselves but after I did it I lost the contents and membership of the lists I'd created though everything else corrected itself.

You're right: deactivate it quickly. I will never, ever, ever understand why any thinking person would have a Facebook account, or put any personal information online. It's crazy, absolutely crazy. I was talking with a couple of barristers very recently and they were recounting cases where insurance companies have been able to prove fraud simply by evidence from Facebook. I had thought that was an urban myth, when actually it's very common for idiots on Facebook to be found out simply by their utterances and photos on Facebook. Your data remains accessible for years to anybody with a bit of computer savvy.

You d have to be a special kind of stupid to commit insurance fraud and then talk about it on facebook lol

But yeah i get what your on about with the whole info thing, but i just deleted it because i spend way too much time mindlessly scrolling thru the newsfeed and before i know it a half hour or hour is gone wasted! or someone will msg me and sit there talking pure ****e for a while haha could be time better spent doing something else!

Not to mention of course the dreaded drunken msgs that have been sent!

Jesus. That time wasting part sounds like me on Boards the past few days. If I ever reach 100 posts here in a year, it would be time to deactivate this account.

That's a new thing alright. Select the outmost (28 Days? 31?).

Previously unless & until you signed back in you remained deactivated.

I'm guessing automatic reactivation is to do with the commerce of Facebook & the preservation of it.

But you see there's plenty of them out there; we in Ireland seem to have a plethora who don't understand privacy settings.

Not to mention those with 1,000+ "Friends" who treat it like a popularity contest!

And who even if they do find out where the option is to change their Status Updates, Photos etc. from Public to Friends Only fail to realise that having the 1000+ Friends and doing this is practically pointless! :)

The phrase "beyond stupid" springs to mind!

If you ever think of deleting it permanently.... You can request a copy of your data from Facebook. I deleted my fb permanently because I was being partially stalked partially bullied.
The data is sent to your email and stays there for a couple for hours for safety reasons.
I downloaded mine and placed it onto a USB stick.
Saves you from downloading pics one by one and even has all statuses and messages that were sent.
I hate fb. Sold my soul joining to be honest and it isn't safe.

    It's not really.

You can simply use it sensibly.

Make sure you uncheck the activation box as it does re activate your account without you signing in. Only found this out Monday after it happened me.

This is correct. anyone who cant see the use of facebook has a very narrow mindset. i dont use facebook and i can understand why someone would benefit from it. with regards to being 'found out', every you do digitally can be traced and monitored. having said that some people clearly dont use enough restraint with facebook, the adults are just dumb but id worry about the younger generation who accept it as part of life and dont fully understand the potential ramifications of posting your life on the internet. Some kids will be sensible, some will learn naturally and some will learn the hard way. i guess its just part of life in the age of technology.

with regards to the op, is there not some facility whereby ya can upload your photos to a cloud in bulk or just download in bulk.? facebook quality pictures are ****e anyways no?

ah not again, wasting my time here browsing and posting in AH!! ;-)

Why in the f*ck do people constantly have to announce they're deleting their Facebook? We. Don't. Care. You're going to be back after a few weeks, 99% of the people that deactivate their profiles do. So let's just save all of us the embarrassment and do it quietly.

And you know what the scary thing is? Chances are that your information is never going to go away, unless you contact Google and ask them for the right to be forgotten.

Request a download of all your data and you'll be amazed at exactly how much information they have on you, that they're at least willing to disclose.

But here's the thing; you willingly singed up for all of this. It's clearly stated in their T&Cs and help centres and numerous other places.

The proper way to do it is to delete all the content you have posted, delete everyone from your friend list and then deactivate your account. Create a new email address , and then swap over the primary email address on the FB account with this.

It takes time, but if you have strong views on data privacy this is the best way. Pure speculation here, but in time the backups of your data on the Facebook servers will be overwritten and will be harder to retreieve unless theres a strong motive ( such as a government investigation ).

However, for some bizarre reason, some folk do not take kindly to being deleted ( especially if you setup the account again at a later date ).

I deactivated my FB account last year (a good move imho).
I can "reactivate" by logging on again to get photos or message people.
Deactivating again only takes around 20 seconds.

I barely use mine, i pretty much have the account just for the messenger app and i have read that you can now just use the messenger without the need of the main profile being activated. I havent bothered trying it yet as like i said i dont really bother with the profile side of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,815 ✭✭✭imitation

I have a friend who periodically reactivates his account, makes a smart arse comment somewhere, and then disappears, its hella annoying !

Did you read the permissions that the messenger app requires? That's why I refuse to download it on to any device.

Nope. I dont really care either as the phone i use for the moment is a ****e one that has nothing on it. I dont bother with a data plan so it cant use that. The phone is purely something to message and ring......just like they were once used for. I had an Iphone i gave it to my son as the battery life was brutal, i then used and loved using (for a long while) an old Nokia that kept its charge for nearly a week which was great. I only went back to using a smartphone because most of my friends, family were using messenger apps as their means of contact....and i must confess the piss taking from my kids over my stone age phone wore me down :D

I do like the "experts" on Facebook security. These people are usually just a tv generation removed from putting a nail into a crab or smelling their keyboard.

Just request your data and put it on a usb stick when it is sent to you and delete it permanently. Best thing I did

They don't sent you the only copy of your data you know? It would still be recoverable from their servers, Google's servers and your USB drive even if they had sent the one copy available

Yea I know but it's still easier than just deactivating it. You'll more than likely just log on again if you deactivate it.

The account is still there though, you've done nothing to scrub your account.

Yea I know technically it's there but you can't log into it and nobody can find you. Besides Google or the Facebook company which is obvious because I already knew that it would never really be totally gone.

The thing with Facebook and others like it is if you don't put up your whole life story on it then whats the problem? there will be nothing worth getting from the profile. Too many people put so much of their lives on it that they no longer have a private life. My FB page has F all on it and im only friends with family and people i actually see fairly regularly. Its also locked down with any private setting available. Iv no worries about any data being stolen on me or of any future employer checking it out.
