You're a dictator - what would you control?

Let's play a (Machiavellian) game.

So you somehow become king/queen/emperor/dictator of a country in a hypothetical universe. There are tensions in your country and you are being challenged by a number of powerful people.

You can control two industries/areas to secure your reign, however you are not allowed to do anything too radical with the industry/organisation you choose eg. - like ordering the army to kill everyone who opposes you, or stopping banks giving out money etc.

What two areas do you choose to control and why? Examples include banks, stock exchange, media, academia, agricultural/food industry, army/armed forces, judges/lawyers etc etc.

I'd choose the media and academia. Media to control the masses and academia to conduct experiments (social or otherwise) to continue the control and to use it to sway the great unwashed. Quite Goebbels-esque!

What areas would you control and why?

The media to tell people what to think and to slowly move their thinking to
my brand of freedom.

The police force to encourage "good" citizenship, makes the citizens wary
of opposition. Nobody wants a label. In either case, the police have the power to kill, yes an inquiry will be held and you can read about it transparently in the papers


I don't like the rules of this game! If I am a dictator, I should be able to
control everything! isn't that the point of being a dictator?

The media. But as a benevolent type, my sole aim would be to remove it from the ownership of the wealthy, thus ensuring that it would be completely free.

The armed forces. So I could kill any bastard who disagrees with me or threatens my power in any way, before burying them and their entire families in unmarked graves.

Since this is a fantasy, I'd several limit the number of people allowed to reproduce.

People should have to pass a certain criteria before having children.

Income, mental health and the stability of their spousal relationship should all be taken into consideration.

I'd control the food industry, and the pharmaceutical industry - regulate the nations food supply, and regulate drugs. That's how to control people - starve them, and then charge a fortune for medication they need to stay alive, to starve some more.

I'd tackle the important issues:

1st decree = 3 day weekend, then we can have bank holiday Tuesdays.

2nd decree = burrito bars in every town in Ireland, there's a truly disgraceful shortage of these fine establishments outside of Dublin.

3rd decree = you want that abortion, go have that abortion, we'd be very socially liberal :-)

4th decree = loads of titty bars for men and women......not sure how women feel about seeing mens boobs though, that could be an issue?

5th decree = all pubs are 24/7, anything else is just plain stupid!

I'd probably go as far as burning the actors too as a warning to others who commit the crime of pretending to act.

I'll take inspiration from China and only allow one child per person.
I'm also a fan of the Chinese police system, plain clothed police and people who speak ill of the regime being taken away for a while or disappearing, a bit like a thought police.
