Insurance Questions

    Hi everyone,

I'm in my twenties and just now learning to drive, literally just starting out, and I can't really find anything by googling so I thought asking here might help.

Outside of lessons, I'll be driving my dad's car (with him there to supervise, obviously) but my question is when it comes to insurance. I received a quote from his insurance company today that seemed a little bit excessive, so is there any point in ringing around the other companies to try to find something better? My mam has me under the impression that I HAVE to be insured by the same company that his insurance is with - is that really the case?

Mammy knows best and all that, but I can't help being hopeful that she's wrong this once :)

If it's your da's car then you'll more than likely be getting added on to his policy as a named driver, you which is a lot cheaper than getting out your own policy in most cases. So your ma's correct, it'd have to be the same company.

It all depends on what you call excessive. Most insurance quotes for learner drivers range from 1500-3500 and up for their own policy on small cars, but it can be a few hundred to add themselves onto a parents policy as a named driver.
