Sore toe

Hope somebody can be of help.

After cycling my big knuckle on big toe on right foot becomes really swollen and sore. Can't move it for 2/3 days.

I've tried changing shoes. No difference.

It appears I'm pushing off my big toe.

Is there any way to prevent this?

Not looking for medical advice. Just others experience.

    Thanks in advance.

    Well you're getting some...

I think this is a classic case of sore toe syndrome. In my experience you can reduce the impact of this pain by cutting off your foot. Trust me, I'm not a doctor.

What type of pedals? You can adjust cleat position (are you suing cycling shoes?) back or forward as well. Do the shoes fit correctly - not too tight? Something's putting pressure on it that's causing this

Are you wearing runners or actual cycling shoes? The latter have stiff soles, which helps.

Botox? I mean, if your toe is paralysed you can't use it to "push off".

If you can't find someone to do it I'll give it a bash. Don't have any botox, but I do have some sharps and I imagine bonjela cut with meths will do the trick.

    Oh, or heat-mouldable insoles.

    The shoes fit perfectly.

I'll try move the cleat a bit and see does that help.

    Thanks

Obviously make sure you move the saddle position to compensate for any front-back cleat movement. Moving cleats back (towards centre of shoe, with saddle down a bit) generally improves problems of foot stress.

Had a bike fit a while back on my old bike. Used the figures for the new one.

Would it be worthwhile to get another one?

    Seen a doctor. Not gout.

Think it is time for a new bike. Great idea.

Just an update for ye. It turns out the sesamoid bone in my foot is broken. Its a stress fracture caused by high arches and cycling shoes. The joint is goosed and will need surgery to repair it and possibly fuse it to prevent it happening again.

All in all it's poxy and I'm off cycling and running for the foreseeable.

Word to the wise. Get a proper insole in your shoes if you have any pain.
