Low oil - now engine rattling

The car was driven with low oil perhaps for a few weeks. The engine started making a rattling noise (when idling) last week so I asked my husband to check the oil, which he did - but incorrectly. The oil lamp flashed on briefly today. Another check revealed the oil was very low. It's been filled up now. The car still makes the rattling sound when it's idle but there's no noise while driving and it drives fine/no problems. Looked at the engine while running - seems to be shaking quite a bit. Obviously I'm going to take it to a mechanic for a check and nobody can say for sure without seeing it etc, but does this sound like serious damage? How much would a new engine cost for a 2000 1L Yaris? Just bought the car 3 months ago

Edit: thought I'd do a bit of research on youtube (I know how daft I sound!) and compared to the videos on there, my engine rattling is very mild/soft. Just praying it's ok/reversible

You need to get the oil pressure checked, if its low would be worth having the sump taken off and strainer cleaned and new oil and filter fitted if not possibly the timing chain that has stretched of tensioner failed but hard to say without hearing the noise.

I wouldn't worry about it just yet. Let a mechanic have a look first.
It's not likely you'll need a new engine.

    Isn't the 1.0 L Yaris 3 cyclinder?
It's going to vibrate a bit more than a 4 cylinder engine will by nature of its design anyway.

Edit - the original Yaris 1.0l was 4 cylinder, it only went 3 cylinder in 2005 second gen.

Bring to a mechanic and let him have a look.

Just how low was the engine oil. Was it on the dipstick or none at all.
How much oil did it take to bring it to the max level?

I stupidly bought a car without checking the oil once and half way home the oil light came on and I checked and the sump was pretty empty....filled it up and two weeks later the engine went bang after rattling for a while.....

hope that doesn't happen to you :-(

Even so the 1.0 4 cylinder engine can feel a bit rattly because it has a very low idle when it's warmed up.

They idle at round 500-600 RPM and it doesn't sound pretty :pac:
