The father in law just bought a new Philips series 4500 that needs a WiFi dongle.. Just wondering would a cheap WiFi dongle from Amazon would work?? Or does it have to be an official Philips dongle??

You could use a wireless range extender ( TP link do one around €30) which would plug into the network part of the TV and also boost local WiFi
Sadly a generic WiFi adaptor has a miniscule chance of working because of specific firmware on the TV
