Hi have a 1997 almera. Starter motor was giving trouble only starting on the key a few times and having to hit it with a hammer the rest of the time. I presumed it was the starter solenoid so i got the new solenoid and swapped it out but i am still having the same problem. The starter itself was only replaced just over a year ago. Any ideas???

Last time I was hitting a starter motor I just ended up changing the lot.

On later inspection of the old one it appeared that the wire between the solenoid and the motor wasn't making good contact and had sunk into the plastic insulator due to getting hot. Over time this molten plastic had seeped in between the terminal tag and the terminal face, insulating it.

Other than that a dry solder joint? Problem is a bit of a hassle unless you have a bad-ass wattage soldering iron to get enough heat into it.

So check all connections are clean as a whistle and that the earth strap / lead is clean and tight too.
