    Hi,

does anyone know the answer to this?

If the main policy holder of a car insurance policy has a claim made against them ,does that mean the named driver no longer has a no claims bonus if they wish to sign up with a different insurance company?

    Thanks

They technically wouldn't have a formal no claims bonus if they are only named on a policy. They would have to inform potential insurers of any accidents they had previously (think it's 5 or 7 years), it will be asked as part of the quote.

A named driver never earns a No Claim Bonus

I know cases when they do.

Anyway - named driver on someone's policy might have policy on their own, and answering OP's question - no they won't loose NCB on their own policy.
Even if they cause the accident in a car with insurance where they were named driver.

    Example (real life example)
I had a car and insurance in my name with my wife as named driver.
My wife also has her own car with insurance in her name (and me as named driver but that's not important).

She caused a single-vehicle accident in my car. So I had to claim from my policy for damage to my car.
She informed her insurer that she had an accident in my car and that my policy was covering it.
She didn't loose her own NCB because of that, but there was a loading on her premium next year due to that accident.
However loading was something silly small - €15 or something.

Some insurance companies years ago did count named driver experience towards a no claims bonus when starting your own policy provided there wasn't more than a 3 month gap.

from memory if the policy holder had a claim before you took out your own policy then yes their claim would mean you didn't get the bonus.

Haven't worked in insurance for over 11 years so I might be remembering wrong.

    .

A named driver has no rights under the contract of insurance, only the policyholder. In practice a lot of insurers will provide a letter of driving history under the policy, but it is not governed by insurance regulations.

There are DPA exceptions, but of little use to potential insurer
