Has anyone got a good way of testing the quantity of vacuum being produced by a vacuum pump?
Backround: I'm having an issue with a diesel car where the turbo dosent kick in until over 3k and the brakes are not fantastic... removing the vacuum feed into the turbo in have found very little vacuum on the pipe ( have checked for cracks already) when revved and before pulling out the servo I want to rule out the pump. The vacuum resivour seems ok with no cracks so I can assume the fault lies with the pump or the servo so, any ideas???

    Vacuum gauge?

Or a vacuum gauge with a pump to check/chasing for leaks?

But does anyone know what negative pressure the vacuum pump should be making? I can feel a suction from the pump but is it the correct amount?? Sorry I may not have explained myself clearly on the original post.

Ballpark figure: At least 15 inHg?

Which on that dial would be about 380 mmHg.

What make of car is it ??
Is your brake pedal hard to push ??
Does the brake pedal feel better if you rev the car upto 3k rpm if it does youre looking at a vacuam pump.

I had a problem similar to the OP's with my wife's car a while back. For all intents and purposes it looked like a weak vacuum pump, but the cause was due to a small pipe which was T'd off the vacuum hose to serve some other purpose with the car (possibly the air recirculation flap in the heater system). This small hose that was T'd off had broken down near the bulkhead and was making an audible hiss when the engine was running. Once the hose was repaired, all issues - including the hard brake pedal - was solved.
