Painting floorboards

Just wondering how hard is it to paint floorboards? I am looking at doing the stairs, landing and 3 bedrooms. The alternative is over €1000k in laminate and carpet :eek: The floorboards are bare at the mo, the orginal plan was to varnish them but we have 3 steps of mdf on stairs! And also there is paint splatters on…
