How to reduce tyre noise (tyre "Roar")?

    Hi,

    I have very loud tyres!

    They're Continental 225/45R17.

You don't notice it so much in the city, but on the motorway, the noise in the cabin is very loud. it may be something to do with the car, I don't know. (it's a Saab 9-5).

I was looking on the Continental website and came across a product called ContiSilent, which they claim reduces interior cabin noise by 9 decibels, which is quite a lot. Has anyone used these tyres?

Semperit had a tyre called a SpeedComfort, but I don't see that on their website any more.

    Appreciate any advice.

    Thanks.

It'll be down to a few things alright.

The insulation in your car. How well sealed/sound-proofed it is under the floor around the pedals and the door seal around the hinges and sill.

Also, your tyre is quite wide at 225 so more rubber is hitting the road.

The compound in the rubber, if harder than normal, will make a louder roar. How well are they lasting you? Many km's so far?

I would put €20 on the ContiSilent you mentioned being of a softer compound but if so, will not last as long.

    It's all a trade off.

When you say the motorway do you mean the M1 heading north? Its a shockingly bad road surface. My car is very quiet every where else but on the M1 its difficult to hold a conversation with passengers.

In my experience Contis are noisy bastards. Had sport contract 2s and 5s and found them almost unbearable.

When I last changed with a similar size (235/40/18) I tried Goodyear efficient grip performance and there is a huge difference in terms of road noise.

    Thanks for all the replies.

It turns out the ContiSilent is a new product, available in a limited range of sizes.

In the end, I bought a couple of Conti Sports. All good.

Ah. I always thought it was just my car (Honda Accord) and 225/R17 tyres. :)

All tyres have a noise rating (in decibels) I try to buy tyres with a maximum of 71dB rating.

Depends on the sound insulation of a given car, in less insulated cars I think you'd need to go to 69dB or below for them to properly quiet.
