Parking brake issues in VW Passat 2008

Having some issues with parking break not coming on/off reliably. Sometimes takes a couple of presses even sometimes having to switch the ignition on/off to get the brake to switch on/off

Has anyone experienced this? Is it just a dodgy connection or sensor or something bigger?

The electric parking brake was always a problem on these Passats. Pretty sure there was a recall for them at some stage. I'd try contacting VW about it or failing that a VAG specialist near you.

It had a full VW service history when we bought It so I'd say if it was recalled it would have been sorted.

    I hope so anyway :o

In a lot of cases it's usually the parking brake button that is the issue. I'd get it looked at first before throwing big money at it.

It's usually accompanied by the warning light and parking break error. That's what I had thought maybe a dodgy connection or sensor

Touareg had the same issue and there was a fix issued. I'm almost sure its mechanically operated however.

The passats are known for problems with the parking brake.
The father had problems and had to get the switch changed twice. The first switch didnt fix the problem so a second had to be got. i do believe the first one wasnt a new one.
They are also known for problems with calipers/motors.
Best go to a garage and get them to look at it.
When it gives up completely the wheels could be locked up as in traffic

Had this happen on my last 06 Passat as well.. started with warnings on the dash and the parking brake intermittently not working (almost got stranded in a car park at one point) but in the end it turned out it needed a new brake caliper.

Fairly common issue. A decent VW specialist should be able to sort it for you. Cost me a few hundred though as far as I remember, but as suggested above it's worth replacing the switch first in case the fault only lies there.

Its that common I carry a switch in the lorry with me, €25 and 5 mins to cure it, calipers also get stuck, water gets into the motor and causes corrosion, replacement caliper the only way to go €350 plus labour

Thanks for the help folks, Will swap out the switch and if not il have a mechanic look at the calipers, Will be due new pads soon enough I'd say
