Annual leave during Xmas period when office is Closed

    Hi All,

    I just have a query on annual leave during the xmas period.
    We get our usual 20 days annual leave entitlement but we need to keep 4/5 days a year for xmas depending on how xmas falls.

    Boss encourages people to take time off to "recharge batteries" so to speak.

    We could come into work if we wanted but then again you couldn't work on your own as we are not allowed in building by yourself.

    But yet the office is "Closed" during this period.

    Are we legally obliged to keep these days for xmas when the office is closed??

    Appreciate any information you can give.

    Yes you can be required to keep those days for when the office is closed

    If you used up too many holidays to date to cover Christmas, either you will not get paid for these days off or you MAY be allowed take leave from next year's allocated holidays.

    I currently have the same situation in my work place and its a pain in the rear.
    Would be interested in the replies you get.

    We get 21 days and 4 or 5 days to be kept for Christmas.
    It does actually leave you with very little to play with over the year..
    I know its nice to have x-mas off when the time comes but its not like you can come in if you would rather save the days.

    Thanks guys, Does it say it in any legislation about this? just as a matter of interest.
    I don't mind holding 3 days for xmas (days between xmas and new years) but being forced to take more outside of that is a bit much.
    But this is only my opinion.

    I find it quite difficult due to the fact we do not get any days for sick leave either. if your sick it comes out of you annual leave unless you take it unpaid.
    So if you get sick at all throughout the year, your really at a loss if you have decided on taking a holiday abroad 1-2 weeks.

    Anyway thanks for the replies :)

    Yes on citizens information it clearly states that your employer can decide when you take annual leave

    It is illegal to be required to take sick leave as holidays but from what you have said you are doing this rather than taking the option of unpaid sick leave so you've nothing there either
