I deleted my facebook permanently about 5 weeks ago. Also instead of poisoning my day early, I only check my email once a day every evening. Here is what I think are underlying problems that get people addicted to social media etc.

    1. Seeking approval and validation - the like button, the comment section etc.
    2. Instant dopamine rush - the sound of notifications in our phone and computer (tweets, messaging etc)
    3. Instant gratification - Various nonsense activities (cat videos, pranks, fail videos?!!?) keeps people lurking for hours.

Pretty much it affects majority of people on planet, I think my job and yours if you have a chance to start influencing people in positive way, the world is just perfectly fine without all social media nonsense.

    Peace

Is there a way to permanently delete an fb account? I thought you could just disable it.

How tiny are the minds how low are the IQ's of those who are 'addicted' to social media sites?

If people could just go ahead and stop using FB etc without having to tell everyone else

    That'd be great

I blame smart phones, constant notifications throughout day, emails, FB, watsapp/viper, txt's, and what ever updates you subscribe to.

    Posted from Windows Phone.

What if they're all talking about you now, dremo?
    You'll never know.
What if one of them has posted something about a party with free chocolate rice crispie buns?
    You'll never know.
And what's wrong with social media validation?
Likes mean you're wanted. Someone loves you.
Thanks here are okay but are given with less love.
Wait a minute. You've been here four years and have so little posts.
I bet you had thousands on Facebook during that period.
How do we know you won't be on Politics.ie this time next year saying you closed your Boards account?
Saying you're finally free of all of us? That we're all just a pack of thanks whores?
Why should we trust you is what I'm saying?
If you're willing to stab Mark Zuckerberg in the back, why not us??

    He's right you know.

Got to get those likes. I was out on Saturday night and looking around the bar I'd say at least three quarters of the people there were on their phones. One table had 3 girls there and they barely spoke to each other, tapping like mad on their phones or taking pictures of their drinks.

Is this what we've come to?

The idea of not having a backlog of diplorable photos for possible sexual partners to browse through is attractive.

But if I'm not on FB, how will I browse through their photos?

Also, can't be arsed remembering birthdays

Were you ignoring your mates while doing a social media inventory of the bar in order to post about it here?

No...just me and the missus at the bar having a drink. No phones for me or her. Amazing to see how people can't survive for 5 minutes without checking out/checking in on their phones.

Had a weird thing happened the other day.

I was on a family holiday about 15/16 years ago to Spain, made a few friends over the fortnight but became quite friendly with one lad, sent a few letters back as pen pals and then used emails and MSN Messenger when they came round. Probably lost contact in 2003/2004.
Stopped using that hotmail address and never linked it (knowingly) to other email accounts. He came up as suggested friend on FB there over the weekend.

How would that have happened? Did it link through Skype or something? Or did he just randomnly search for me once and now FB is showing him as a suggested connection?

Blew my mind when I saw it though.

I posted on a thread about Japanese Knotweed on Boards.

On my next visit to YouTube a video about JK was suggested to me.

    I'd mine de-activated but kept getting emails telling me I had photo-tags ; friend-requests & notifications.
Didn't think you could permanently delete your account either.

You can but the process is a bit dragged out! Also can take up to 90 days for everything to be deleted.

Sometimes I think about how disappointing it would feel to generations before us to see how social media obsessed we've become. I imagine for them to witness a group of people glued to their phones and not talking would be pretty surreal.

    Here's a very weird one.
I took a picture of an old photograph that was taken 15 years ago and posted it up on fb. It was a team photo of my local football team. We were all about 14 at the time. One of the lads tagged up instantly under facial recognition. Thing is, this guy is never post on fb and there's only a few tagged pics floating about that his gf took. Some of the other lads would have hundreds of pics. What I think is no coincidence is that he lives and work in america and is currently looking to marry the american gf, get greencard etc.

It is fairly exciting when you see the little red '1' over the notification icon. Then you check it and it's an invitation to play some stupid game.

How do you think that is related?

Also if he's working chances are he HAS a greencard. Are you thinking of citizenship?

That would be the one yes. I was thinking of the film greencard with gerard deparduex where they have to get married so he can get a greencard...

Didn't know this until now but just guessed Ireland /Europe would have restricted this tech. FB were forced to withdraw this tech in europe in 2012.

And how is Facebook embroilled in this? Apart from the wedding invites of course.
