Travel Republic Cancellation Charge

    Hey all
Going on hols in September. Usually book ahead with booking.com and pay closer to the time. This time I booked a place with booking.com AND with TravelRepublic who I hadn't used before. Presumed it was the same gig i.e. free cancellation - this is what booking.com are famous for and TravelRepublic charge a $1 deposit to reserve your holiday so I definitely presumed they don't charge a cancellation fee.
So last week we decided to go with the booking.com one and paid the amount in full. Went to cancel the TravelRepublic one and it wants £40 sterling to cancel (and when I check the terms and conditions yep there it is - sneaky!)... AND if I don't pay in full by 10th August it will charge the full amount to my credit card!!!
So apart from me being an eejit and not reading the T&C.... my card has actually changed twice in the meantime. It expired in May so I got a new one and last month I lost it and got a new one.
I also have another trip in November booked and paid for in full via Travel Republic and have an accomodation voucher etc for that so bit worried if I ignore their cancellation charges they can unilaterally cancel that but I checked the T&C and if it's paid up doesn't seem to be something they can do.
I know I should pay the 40 quid but I feel seriously scammed tbh.

How is it sneaky if it's in the terms and conditions?

Why would a €1 deposit infer free cancellation?

Why would you book the same holiday twice?

I'd pay the cancellation fee as otherwise you'll be liable for the cost of the whole holiday regardless of your cancelled credit card.

If you're with the same bank TR may well be able to put the charge through on the new card since they will have preauthorised the amount.

In this case you do need to suck it up and pay the cancellation charge, an expensive lesson to learn.

Yeah fair point about the T&C but I don't know anyone who actually reads them in advance, hence consumers always have issues. But I take your point and will be more judicious in future for sure.
Re: pre authorisation, nah, they defo didn't do that as my card limit is 1000 euro less than the cost of the holiday, plus it was to expire the month after I booked it so I reckon they just used it for the £1 deposit as it would have bounced doubly otherwise for pre authorisation.
I have cancelled it anyway and it says they will take the cancellation charge from the card specified so I guess I'll just wait and see do they push for the 40 quid.
