Car Insurance Rip Off

Just want to let off a bit of steam here... Yesterday I bought a car, a 1400cc petrol 4 door hatchback, needed it urgently to get to and from a new job I started. Driving on full licence for approx 25 years, no points on licence or claims on insurance bar a cracked windscreen replacement. However due to being unemployed for a couple of years I didn't have a policy in my own name for over 2 years, had full No Claims Bonus up to this point, am a named driver on the missus policy for the last few years. I rang up Insurance company ( not sure if I am allowed to name names or numbers :D here) However when I informed the guy I spoke with that the missus is already insured with them he said he would pass me over to their loyalty dept. where I would be offered a discount...Happy days I thought to myself...After going through an endless number of questions he was delighted to quote me 701 Euro..SEVEN HUNDRED AND ONE EURO....I said he must be having a laugh, I expected something around 300 to 350 Euro....I am flabbergasted, live in a quiet area, car is not worth much, I am not a young boy/girl racer...How in the name of God is it this so expensive?

This is why. You have 0 NCB now.

Yeah the two year NCB limit is a bit of joke. In my opinion NCB should be regulated, I always kinda assumed companies had to offer it but wasn't too sure. But now I think they all just happen to offer it in a really similar way. It should be regulated and shouldn't expire after two years, that rule encourages people to always have a car even if they don't need it, Government policy should incentivize people to give up one car in their household, which they could do by regulating this.

Instead of venting shop around and compare. For zero bonus, 700 quid isn't that bad.

Agreed, with zero bonus that isn't bad.

Shop around, someone on here recently got a quote of about 400e with no bonus in place

Always thought Boards was a good place to let off steam and perhaps get good advice in return....Strange how some are able to accept that 700 quid is actually not that bad for insurance for a 40 something male with a clean driving history on a bog standard 1400cc car...Ridiculous in my book...What a rip off ....What a rip off.

Did you actually take any of the advice you were offered and shop around?

    NCB is where the big discounts are. 700 - 50% = 350.

    Good advice: earn some NCB

I'm 2yrs older, driving a bog standard Focus 1.4, full NCB, driving since i was 18, no claims at all ever apart from chip repair in windscreen, no points. I just renewed mine at 480, and that was shopping around everywhere, so 700 with No NCB, you got a bargain there

Ya it's a rip off but nothing any of us can do about it! Regulators are a joke and this recent hike in insurance is shocking. I didn't renew my policy in march because I sold my car the week after the insurance ran out to a local person who had said they would buy it off me whenever I was selling, anyways my renewal would have been 900 (car was a 02 bora 130sport). Now at the time I was also named on the aul fella's van so was in no rush to renew as my cash was tied up in another car I was repairing to sell on. A fortnight ago when I went to get a quote on a small run about (1.9d pug 206) I was quoted 1600 I burst out laughing at them! I sold the run about again and fixed up my grandmothers late 90's corolla and got insured on it as a named driver with my mother being the main policy holder cost 600 all in (she wanted the car back on the road again so to do this actually did make sense in the grand scheme of things anyways) I'm waiting to buy a 320d bmw off a local woman when she upgrades in the next few months for a car like that I will regrettably pay around the 1.5k for insurance but hell will freeze over before I feel the need to pay 3 times the value of a car for insurance as was the case with the pug 206.
My only advice to you is to shop around and I mean shop around try them all as a 40+ year old insurance companies will want your business so you should get lower than 700, I'm a 22 year old male with 1ncb in my own name so they really couldn't care less about insuring me since I'm such a "high risk candidate"
