Has anyone experience with them ?
Would a cold roof or warm roof design be best ?
Has anyone ever purchased a large skylight for a flat roof and can you recommend a supplier ?

I re-covered two flat roofs a few years ago now with EPDM. One a standard sized garage and the other a large sun-room. I download a video and set of instructions from the supplying company which were pretty easy to follow.

I have to say the results were excellent. If you are a competent DIYer then it is pretty straight forward to do. As it is one piece covering the whole roof it is far superior to a torch on felt system in my opinion.

The fiddly bits were the upstands, dealt with by scarfing the edge into a brick mortar joint, the edges, which are sorted by using a technique of folding the rubber around a tanalised roof batten and fixing to the facia board. The glue supplied with the rubber provided excellent adhesion even on the brick faces.

The only help I needed was to lift the rubber onto the roof as it was heavier than you expect. The rest I managed on my own. It is a matter of choice whether you decided to gravel the roof afterwards but I didn't bother as the gravel would just attract dirt and plant growth.

I have since spoken to the old couple who bought the property from me and they have never had a problem with the roofs.

Thanks for the reply. Who was your supplier ? I plan on going with a green roof so if I can get old carpet I'll put it down on top of the EPDM followed by compost.

How was your flat roof designed ? was it rafters, vapor barrier, insulation, timber sheeting followed by the EPDM ?

OK, bearing in mind it was a few years ago I think it was this company.

Their prices were competitive and the instructional video was easy to follow. I was also able to speak directly to one of their fitters for any advice I wanted.

The garage on their front page was identical to mine except that mine was attached to the main bungalow along one side.

The garage roof was simple 4 or 5 x 2 rafters and 8 x 4 chipboard sheets. The rubber went down on top of this. No roofing membrane or insuation.

The sunroom was 5 x 2 rafters, roofing membrane, then 18mm ply and the rubber on top. I insulated between the rafters of the sunroom with 3" or 4" celotex/kingspan foil backed sheets with a air gap of about 50mm.

There was a poorly constructed and fitted roof vent in the sunroom but as I fitted brand new glazing I removed the vent which made it a more simple task. Having said that dealing with a vent or velux would have been pretty straightforward .

Hope this helps. I have to say tht I am surprised there is not more use of EPDM here in Ireland. It has a better life span than felt AFAIK.
