Questions about Universal Laptop Adapter wattage.

    Hi.

    If a Universal Laptop Adapter wattage is 90w -- does this mean it can work on all laptops that use up to 90w e.g. a 60w laptop? Or does it mean it will only work on laptops that need exactly 90w?

    Any up to 90W

    The device only draws what it needs from the power supply. So it's anything up to 90W.

    I see. So it'd be a good idea to go over if possible the wattage your laptop needs -- for future proofing?

    In my 14 years working on laptops, I've never seen a centre pin negative one, they've all been centre pin positive.

    If you look at the DC socket on most laptops, there's a pin in the centre, which goes inside a corresponding hole in the power supply plug. There's also a secondary contact which meets up with the outside of the plug. Dells and some HPs have a centre pin but it's unrelated to polarity and they work a different way.

    Polarity refers to what direction the power goes in and out of the device. If it goes in via the centre pin, it's centre pin positive. If it goes in via the other contact, it's centre pin negative. You can destroy a device if you get it wrong! But I've never seen a centre pin negative laptop.
