Waiting time for op in Tallaght Hospital

Does anyone have a rough idea of how long someone would be waiting for surgery in Tallaght Hospital?

A family member of mine has been waiting since October 2014 and hasn't been sent a date yet.
I contacted the hospital about five months ago to be told "it won't be this side of August", but they couldn't give me a date.

This family member is in agony daily and would like to basically know when he'll be called.

How long is a piece of string unfortunately. Depends entirely on the specialty and the extent of the illness. What may be agony for your relative, the consultant may see it as routine.

Any way of going private? Or look up the national treatment purchase fund.

From my point of view, going back a few years now. Had an issue. Saw GP. He referred me to a consultant publically. I waited over 6 months and heard nothing. Rang consultant secretary and asked the situation. Despite me being in agony, I was a routine case and she reckoned I'd be another perhaps 8 months before I saw the consultant. I got transferred to his private clinic, saw him three times over 6 months (trying different options), had surgery, was discharged three months after surgery, and fully recovered before the appointment came up publically.

Was referred to a consultant publically last year and still waiting! Routine though so no need to go private.

It really does depend on so many factors.

As stated above it depends on the nature of it. Some public waiting lists are so long that you could join vhi, wait out the wait period for pre existing condition and have the job done privately before the public appointment came up!

The NTPF hasn't arranged treatment for people since 2011.

Something that might be worth trying is having the GP refer your family member to a less busy public hospital?

Other than that the only option is to go private.

I was 24 months waiting on shoulder surgery ,
9 months waiting for kidney stone removal ,
and the wife waited just over a year for gaul bladder removal ,
3 year wait for a MRI

It's hard to say how long you could be waiting for a op in tallaght been honest hopefully your relative won't be waiting too long

    Jesus, that's awful Gatling.
Well I guess there's nothing to do but wait. My relative has a Medical Card and wouldn't be able to afford going private, so I guess it's just a waiting game.

Thanks a million for all your replies.

Waste of time, energy and money. You'll get through to the secretary, who won't be able to influence the waiting list at all. There are many things which influence waiting lists, such as the urgency of the procedure, number of others referred, available theatre time and space, locum cover for consultant's leave, overcrowding in A&E leading to routine/elective surgeries being cancelled etc etc etc. the patient or their family hassling the secretary isn't one of the factors which will influence it.

    Good news.
I called the hospital just there (so that's two phone calls I've made in five months) and she was able to tell me he should be called for surgery in October/November.
It's brilliant because we thought it'd probably be next year some time.
