    Can you score from the puck out in a game of hurling?

    This came up in an underage game the other evening.
    Goalie took puckout, it didn't hit anyone took a bounce and then hopped off a rough spot past the goalie and into the goals.

    Referee didn't know what to do.

    I would say the goal should stand, once it travels outside his own 21 yard line it is "in play" as far as i'd be concerned.

    Nope, underage games usually have a local rule that you can't score directly from a puck out, this is mainly cause pitches can be very small and it's an unfair advantage for teams with bigger players.

    In full pitch games the score would be allowed to stand.

    I can't see why it would not stand. Other than a square ball, I don't think there is any part of the pitch you can't score from, and a puck out is part of play, so there should not have to be a necessary intervention by another player before a score can happen.

    There are indirect frees in hurling though, so if a puckout was designated as an indirect free, you'd be allowed score from it.


    I don't know the actual rule but I have seen a score from a puckout only once before and it was given as a point.

    Scores from a puck out are allowed, a puck out is to restart play so the ball is in normal play. Underage games however have their own subsets of rules and are to encourage all the skills for all players so normally they don't allow scoring from puck outs. Some of the rules I've seen/used are puck outs as a free, sideline cut or can't go through 2 zones.

    Don't get me started on the whole "indirect" free in hurling, ffs, the ball can travel 100 yards in a puck, why they can't just reset the play with a throw in or line ball or puck out I don't know, too much of an unfair advantage IMO

    I think a sideline is fairest... the ball can travel far, but the longer you hit it the harder it is to retain possession. A throw-ball is too 50-50- for example if a team are carrying the ball out of defence unopposed, bringing it back to a throw-in would be unfair on them.
