Hi all, we've been quoted €800 for a 3 day week (8.30-4) in a daycare in dublin for our 17month old.

Seems quite pricey to me. would this be an average sorta price?

    Thanks in advance.

That is exactly what I paid for my now 6 year old as a baby and the price did not drop until ECCE year.

It's pricey alright for a three-day week. I enquired in our place to see how much it would cost if we were to reduce from a five-day week to a three- or four-day week, and we really wouldn't have saved that much. They don't just charge you for 3/5ths of the normal weekly price.

Where we're based (Dublin 15) most of the creches are around the €1,000 mark for a five-day week, and maybe anywhere from €700 to €800 for a three-day week, from what I remember. Also you're probably not saving any money by collecting the child at four - they are probably quoting you the same price as if you were to drop the child off at the earliest opening time and if you were to collect them five minutes before close.

It's possible you'd get more flexibility and a better price if you were to go with a childminder, if that's an option at all? They'll be more likely to take into account the fact that you'll be collecting the child earlier than most parents. Also maybe try some smaller independent creches rather than one of the big chains (again, more chance of getting some flexibility and room for negotiation on price.)

Thanks guys. Yea it's a throw up between a childminder and daycare. Currently we have a childminder 2 days per week at €12 per hour. My little guy will start montessori in August and we will have to say farewell to our lovely minder as she is a teacher. So I'm just looking at a few options. Daycare is somewhat appealing at the moment as I think it would be good for her to socialise and alsowe wouldn't have too through the whole stress again of putting all our trust into 1 specific person/ or finding the right 1 person to mind them if that makes sense?

Thanks moonbeam. I always thought it was more expensive for a baby than an older baby/toddler...

Loads of places charge almost the same for full time as part time.

I actually pay a full time fee for mine, even though she is in 2.5 days, because their daily rate is more than their full time rate. Full time is 750. 2.5 days was working out at 850.

We found drop off to a childminder (in their house) the best value option particularly because I'm a teacher so we can save during the holidays and we love our lady. Its 180e a week for North Kildare near Lucan. The creche would have been around 940 a month

Thanks all. So it sounds like €800 for the 3 days (8.30-4) seems about the norm. Thanks for that. I just wanted to make sure we weren't paying more than the norm.

    ,
i pay €6 per hour for 5 four hour days per week. does the rate go down as they get older? i have a baby and a three year old and its the same price for both of them. i would have thought with the child to minder ratio increasing as they get older, the rate per hour would decrease!
    thanks.

Go to Pobal maps. it will show you all the crèches in your area and you can read the most recent HSE report. this is much more important that recommendations.

A crèche was recommended to me by numerous people, I went to see it and tbh I wouldn't send a dog there never mind my child!!

now Pobal maps is a heap of antiquated ****e. You cant access on it tablets or smart phones and you will need to download Mircosoft Silverlight.

Great thanks. I will try that. Hadn't thought of the HSE reports. Thats a great way for me to check the smaller creches.

we are paying 888 for a 4 day week, including a 10% corporate discount, in Leopardstown. The chain we go to starts with G and my boss just had to register the business with them to get the discount.

We paid €625 a month for 3 days and when my son turned 2 this year it has gone down to €600 a month for 3 days, Dublin 24. Love his creche, it's a small one and all ages are separated. 0-1, 1-2, 2-3, then 4+
I think it's a very reasonable rate and his development has been great. (so far!)

I have a childminder for my 14 month old and pay €40 per day from 07:30 to 18:00. She is there 3 days per week so it costs me €120 per week and that includes breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I drop her to the minders house if that makes any difference. I found her on www.mindme.ie
