VoIP is the technology you use to call using Internet Protocol. When you place a call over the internet, you are using VoIP.
What is it you want to get out of VoIP? Are you calling landlines/mobiles or VoIP -> VoIP?
Do you want video calling? e.g. Skype/Facetime/Viber etc?

Skype uses VOIP ....... Voice Over Internet Protocol

It does so using a proprietary protocol.

The 'standard' protocol for VOIP is SIP, which the majority of providers use.

I almost exclusively use SIP for calls ..... with one contact who insists on Skype and another who uses Viber for texts and calls.

Other than those two I use SIP for calls to landlines and mobile phones.

You need to state clearly what you want to achieve, as no one scheme is suitable for everyone.

Maybe something like a browser based set up would suit you ..... like Firefox Hello or other such schemes.
