I am planning on driving from Dublin Airport to Westport Co.Mayo and returning to Dublin City in September. Can I make this trip without using the toll roads? What is the best route to take?

    Thanks in advance

    Head over to http://maps.google.ie

On the search bar at the top left click the arrow thing for directions
Stick Dublin Airport as starting point and Westport as destination
Then to the right on the Leave now text there's a settings option icon, click on that and tick the Avoid tolls option
Then search and a few options come up.

    The first/default search result is:
    via N53 h 19 min
    263 km
    3 h 14 min without traffic · Show traffic

    Dublin Airport
    Dublin
Get on M50 from Swords Rd/R132, Old Airport Rd and R108
    8 min (4.8 km)
Continue on M50. Take Navan Rd/N3 and M4 to R148 in Kildare. Take exit 8 from M4
    32 min (37.2 km)
Get on M4 in Kinnegad from R148
    28 min (32.3 km)
Follow N4 to N5 in Mayo
    2 h 18 min (189 km)
    Westport
    Co. Mayo

You can but I cannot think of too many reasons to want to.

    This.

Whatever about the M4 toll, which is easily enough avoided (come off at the Kilcock exit, and return after Enfield, but you'll add plenty time to your journey depending on the time of day), I cannot imagine wanting to get from Dublin Airport to the M4 without the M50

You can skip around the m50 toll easy enough leaving the airport. Through blanchardstown and lucan is one option but I think it would only make sense if you wanted to go to those places.

    Dub Airport -> M50 -> N3 -> M3 -> R157 -> R148 -> R406 -> M4

    Thanks everyone.

The reason I want to avoid the toll roads is because I understand that tourists driving rental cars have ha problems with the toll system.

Only on the M50 - just make sure to pay by 8pm the next day so there's no problem. All other tolls you can pay in cash at the toll barrier.

You can pay online, by phone, or in most petrol stations (and I think a lot of newsagent-type shops as well) for the M50 toll. You just need the reg of the car. You have till 8pm the following day to pay.

The M4 toll you pay in cash at the toll plaza. I think it's €2.90 for a car (if that's wrong someone will be along to correct it!). Have the correct change ready and you can go through any lane except the express one.

I really wouldn't be going the non-motorway routes if that was your only reason.

+1 There are six Payzone agents in or close to Westport town, all you have to do is go in, state the registration number and that you want to pay the M50 toll. Keep the receipt and show it (but do not hand it over) to the rental people when returning the car.

McLoughlin's Spar Shop Street Westport Westport
Holland's Daybreak Leenane Road Carrabawn Westport
    Costcutter Dohertys 9 Mulranny Westport
    Supervalu (Westport) Shop St Westport
McGreevys Westport Corner House Bridge Street Westport
    Spar Maxol Newport rd Westport

Most medium to large shops (newsagents & convenience stores) and a lot of filling stations do Payzone, just look for the logo which may be a sticker on the window or door or on an external sign .....

You can even prepay up to two journeys up to 14 days in advance either online or at a Payzone agent if you want.

If the OP is renting a car, they're unlikely to know the registration though....

That's true, but if they have a smartphone they could do it once they pick up the car before they leave the airport. They have a pretty good mobile version of their website.

    Thanks again everyone.
    Great advice!

Looks like it is no problem at all to use the toll roads. I thought that it could not be as bad as what I have seen posted here and there on the Internet. Makes a difference to be well informed!
