Dublin 1 certainly has a bad rep but if you are sensible then you are unlikely to have any issues. I have never had any issues living in the area.

Lived in d1 for 5 years and in mountjoy for two, no issues, just be reasonable as previous poster wrote..know another person (female) who's been living there six years and not thinking of moving away

Is not the best area in Dublin, but is not bad. I've got friends in the area and they never had any problem. You can feel that is not the place for walking around in the night while using your iPhone thought.

The question may be why do you want to rent there. If is because of the lower prices, think about it again. Maybe 4-5 years ago it was a cheap area, but now that is "gentrified" is as expensive as any other neigborhood.
