Write off Value

Howya lads, was in an accident during the week, assessor is coming out next week, I'm fairly certain it's a write off!!

Now I know Insurance companies are not in the business of giving away money!

I checked the "value" of my car on revenue.ie, it came back as €5400, however the cheapest asking price I can find anywhere for my model/spec/mileage is €7500

So is there any way I can argue any offer I'm made if I feel it's way off actual OMSP?

Appoint your own motor engineer if you are not happy with the offer. Then negotiate. Also get cash price examples from garages for similar models. Done Deal, Buy & Sell etc won't be accepted as they are known to quote 'opening bid' prices, with the owner understood to accept lower offers

I think you'd be doing well to get a good one for €5500

As above, play it out and see what they offer, I would have thought your own valuation is closer to the cost of replacement.

just couple factors,if you had an accident-and it wasn't your fault you might have more room to get value you want,as opposed if you were at fault-not much space for haggling on $.

Also you say might be a write off,ive been around some garages that do work and sometimes youd be amazed what they bring in and complete to original state, like getting or using few models as spares to bring one back-so might be a possibility depending on circumstances and damage done if they see that dropping couple grand or so would get it back on the road instead off paying you in full.

    Can anyone recommended an engineer?
How much will it set me back? And is there any point in getting an independent engineer to assess the car until after I see what the Insurance company comes back to me with?

Much easier than appointing your own engineer - use carzone & DD and provide plenty of examples that have similar spec/mileage/condition to yours. Send them to the insurance company and state that you are looking for nothing more than to be put in the position you were before the accident. There is always the ombudsman if you feel like you're being treated unfairly...

Carzone, Done Deal and Buy & Sell are not accepted as valid contradictions to a qualified engineer

I'm a qualified Engineer and that's nonsense, an engineer is not a QS, nor a car trader buying and selling cars day in day out. The approach of citing other adverts is a common approach which I know people to use and get success - the first offer from insurance companies is nearly always a joke.

If this avenue doesn't work as a first go, then appoint an engineer but at the end of the day it should be sorted relatively painlessly.

Having a quick look on carzone, I would settle for an offer of 7k.

Day in and day out, I deal with insurers who promptly reject such adverts. While I am an advocate for the claimant, I have to agree that quoted prices from those sources are 'opening offers' and the final sale price is the correct market value, not the advertised price

Would the OMSP from the revenue site be a valid write-off value if I wanted to contest the price given by an insurance company?
