I hae just discovered my Grandfathers record of his time in the Volunteers. In it there is a copy of the info he supplied when applying for his Volunteer pension. Over the time he was active he is described as the P.O.

Can anyone tell me what this stands for.
    Thank you

Well if it was a typical revolutionary guerrilla force it would be "political officer". But I'm not sure if the IRA were "revolutionary" in that sense. Might be a better question for the history forum.

go into the defence force website, go into archives and look at witness reports. type in his name or unit and see what he or his unit were involved in .

    Thanks for the replies.
The Unit is well known for its actions and his name comes up in records but never has a P.O beside it. My Grand Uncle is celebrated for his part in the History of the local unit as he was OC.
My Grand father always gave the impression he was no more than a runner so my father was surprised to see him with Battallion PO for 4 years on a record
There is a notebook with more detailed personal records among the things we have found so hopefully I can learn more
