Do I need to be sole-trader?

I might start teaching freelance in September - private classes. Waiting to see if there's a market here and if time allows. I'm married and currently unemployed for a number of years and jointly assessed. If I do teach my maximum salary would be less than 5K and I would have to pay public liability out of that plus some expenses.
    My questions are:
Do I need to register as self-employed?
If I take out insurance as a sole-trader do I have to be registered as self-employed?
If I register as self-employed do I have to pay tax upfront based on estimated earnings? This is the bit that worries and scares me as I don't have the spare cash to do that!
What are the figures at which I would be liable for tax and prsi?

I have looked at revenue.ie and citizens information website but questions are not answered there so hoping someone can help here.

    Tax upfront? No.

No income tax until 16,500 for single PAYE workers, or 8250 for self-employed single workers.

    No not grinds, after-school.
Not single though, married and jointly assessed so is the limit lower?
    Thanks for replying btw
