Fibre using ducting for electric gates is it feasible?

    K&N are laying ducting on the footpaths in front of freinds house, apparently the old copper route is not suitable, ducting too small, friend has automatic gates and I know theyused red ducting to take power and data cables to gate motors and intercom. Its 1.5 inch ducting, could eircom run the fibre in same ducting or is it a no no, ie too near the power or is the screen on the fibre robust enough to stop any interference. Otherwise they may have a problem!! The drive is about 120 feet from road, could be more.

    Fibre doesnt receive EMI from parallel carriers. Its not conductive. They run it along 10kV lines.

    Problem is the space, they need to be able to easily snake it.

    thats sounds good, a water hose pipe it would appear can be easily pushed in. With fibre does it matter re bends?? or right angles?

    Can I just clarify to get fibre they run a blue duct and then blow the fibre to the terminating point? The manhole will be on footpath quite close to gates. For say the house next door eircom guy said they may use a worm then pull duct etc. Are these worms fast? How long to do 130 feet?

    Right angle = no no. You have to control the turn radius.


    They use orange ducting that Ive seen. Can't comment on worming it, theyve a history of saying you dig it and call us back when thats done.

    ED E ...... any idea what the minimum safe radius is for the fibre ducting?

    Per eircoms "Duct Manual" - "Optical Fibre cable, eircom recommend that the diameter should not exceed 7.5mm (for 14/10mm sub-duct) and must conform to the International Telecommunications Unions (ITU) recommendations.
    Smaller diameter fibre cable is required where smaller diameter sub-duct is deployed". As Ed E says larger bend radius is vital with fibre as there is a low tolerance for tight bends.

    If no specific recommendations are available from the cable manufacturer, the cable should not be pulled over a bend radius smaller than twenty (20) times the cable diameter.
    After completion of the pull, the cable should not have any bend radius smaller than ten (10) times the cable diameter.

    So (for 7.5mm cable) 150mm radius when being pulled and 75mm when completed ....... or am I misunderstanding the above?

    See the fibre manual - http://www.thefoa.org/tech/ref/install/installcbl.html Might be slightly outdated but the basic principals should be the same.
