    Guys,

Anyone know where I can watch this documentary "Rough Rider"? Speaking with some guys in the club last night, some of them have not seen it and I said I would try find a link for it, but I am having no luck.

I thought it might have been on the RTE player, but no.

    Cheers,

I watched it a few months ago when it was originally aired and it turned me right off Kimmage. He came across as a disgruntled failed cyclist who now has an obsession with taking down all those who dove better than him.

Nah, that's not how he is in my eyes. Yes, he is a little bitter that he did not really achieve much but the way in which he was treated when he blew the whistle was disgraceful. It kinda gave both sides of the story, I thought it was a good watch.

Kimmage was a talented cyclist who only "failed"* because everyone around him was taking PEDs and he couldn't hack it. He is obsessed alright, but it's not with taking down people who did better than him, it's with taking down cheats. If it wasn't for people like him who stuck their head above the parapet, cycling might still be dominated by people like Armstrong and Verbruggen.

went to see kimmage and walsh doing a live discussion in the bord gais a couple years back.. the difference between them is striking.. walsh super polished and suave, kimmage abrasive and uncompromising. i personally like the guy.. he's a b8llix in the way he comes across but only because he's so passionate about what he does. he had a proper go at walsh's relationship with team sky that night and it didnt come across as rehearsed, was a bit awkward truth be told. he's a character and the sport is better for people like him writing about it. i think his personality is well rep'd in the doc. must try and find it actually. my upc managed to chop the second half out of my recording

Kimmage's manner can rub people the wrong way but sport in general and cycling in particular owes him a debt.

It's his fearlessness in asking hard uncomfortable questions that makes him the best interviewer I've ever read. The full Landis interview is a brilliant piece of writing.

I got the impression that this character trait made O'Driscoll very uncomfortable and ended the project. Must have been a rude awakew from fanboys like Thornley

you can imagine some of the directions he tried to go in with O'Driscoll and rugby in general, im not surprised the relationship ended.

It's pretty easy to find on illegal streaming/file sharing sites but that's up to you to find out. I watched it last week again one night I couldn't sleep.

A disgruntled failed ex pro who has finished the TDF and Giro, placed top 10 in a pro stage race and been to the Olympics as well as having national road titles and medals in cyclocross as well.
Wish I was a failed cyclist like that .....

I remember when he appeared on the late late back in the day when he originally called out a lot of people including a number of Irish pro's. I remember being repulsed by his allegations and view in general about what was going on (I was only about 11!). How my opinion has changed over the years.

In my opinion Paul Kimmage is the real hero, he has followed through in his convictions (granted very strongly at times) but he stood up to who I feel is the biggest disgrace to any professional sport and has been vindicated. For me it's simple, the world of professional cycling needs people like him, no wait it's not just that if more people were a little more like him there be less BS in sport generally.

you don't remember it that well because he never called anybody out, in fact he refused to say if he thought Roche was doping or not

Off topic from Paul kimmage but one thing that caught my eye from the documentary was Greg lemond trying to win the sprint on the champs Elysée in 86' when he was about to win the tour.

Now it's just a photo opportunitie for the winner

Pretty sure he was just being used as a lead out in the sprint for the likes of Hinault.

Hinault was finished In sprints at that stage and lemond went up against Kelly in Paris Roubaix in sprints before.

They were more all round cyclists then is what im saying.

Yet Hinault finished 4th that very same day? Finished in sprints? I think not. That's arguable. You still had the sprinters, the climbers and the all rounders. In LeMond's case it was simply a case of the team utilising it's men to set a good platform for their guy (Hinault) to get a chance at the win.
